Annam is an ancient Chinese name for a portion of central Vietnam. The Chinese controlled this territory from the second century B.C. until A.D. 939, when a rebellion drove the Chinese out. Although the Chinese recaptured Annam early in the fifteenth century, they were soon overthrown again. By 1428, Annam functioned as an independent monarchy. The territory was enlarged to include most of Indochina. The country survived in relative peace and prosperity until the late eighteenth century when the French took an interest in it.
