Angkor Wat is a twelfth-century temple complex at Angkor, the capital of the Khmer Empire of Cambodia. It is the largest known religious monument ever constructed. The structure was built to celebrate the king’s incarnation as the god Vishnu. It was also meant to serve as his burial chamber. Though now in ruins, it is clear that a central tower was surrounded by four smaller towers. These represented Mount Meru, which, according to Hindu mythology, is where the gods live. The central tower was surrounded by terraces that symbolize the earth. A moat enclosed the complex, signifying the ocean.
